The Victorian Livestock Exchange at
Pakenham is regarded as one of the premier selling
centres in Victoria.
The $8 million centre was built in
1998 and was the first saleyard in Victoria to be built
entirely undercover with a soft floor. Today more than
170,000 cattle are sold annually through the saleyards.
The saleyard is privately owned and
covers 16,000 sq. metres. It features a 120-seat selling
ring, 130 selling pens and 100 holdings pens. It caters
for cattle, sheep, pigs and horses. The soft floor and
quality lighting provides excellent conditions for both
livestock and employees.
It also has the latest weighing and
accounting systems, AVDATA truck-wash facilities,
boardroom and a 100-seat restaurant and function centre.
Cattle are weighed post-sale
on a revolutionary 'single weigh' Supaway weighbridge.
There is also a 'bulk weigh' scale for larger pen lots.
The saleyard attracts both vendors and buyers from all
over Australia.
